Ederdun i verdensklasse - når ærfuglen lager redet sit napper den av seg den mykeste dun vi har her i verden. Dette er ærfuglens gave som takk for at vokteren har passet på. Ikke noe dynefyll er så lett og gir fra seg så mye varme som ederdun. I motsetning til dun fra and og gås, har ederduna små mothaker som gjør at den holdes sammen. Ennå driver folk i dunværene på Helgeland det tidkrevende arbeidet å håndrense duna. Grovrensingen må gjøres med en gang, ellers blir duna ødelagt. Mesteparten av arbeidet blir gjort på øyene om sommeren, på vindstille dager. Det tar et par uker å rense ett kilo dun. Duna tørkes, ristes, grovrenses og finrenses. Finrensingen skjer ved å harpe på en dunharpe, en ramme trædd med tråder av fiskesnøre eller nylontråd. En trepinne, harpstikke, føres fram og tilbake over strengene. Når de vibrerer, setter den rene duna seg fast på strengene og boss og fjær faller ned.
